history
Le But is an ancient fortified castle, once flanked by four towers and a surrounding wall. Over the years and through wars, the castle has given way to an imposing fortified manor house, standing on its mound and still ready to defend the valley.
Around 500 years ago, the gentilhommière du But was the home of the noble Testard du But family. They are recorded in the archives as Écuyer et Seigneur du But, sometimes elected for the King in Périgord. They were good hobgoblins who wisely cultivated the land around their manor. At the dawn of the French Revolution, the But still belonged to the Testards.
We’re still looking into the history of this place, but we assume that looting and abandonment have taken their toll on many architectural elements, such as the surrounding wall, which has all but disappeared, and the chapel.
When you’re 500 years old, you’ve got a lot of stories to tell. Just imagine the horses galloping home through the porte cochère, the soldiers ready to arquebuse through the loopholes, the banquets around the fireplace. Legend has it that Francis 1st himself stayed here.
The Goal is waiting for you to write the next 500 years.
